The First Messianic Promise

When the Lord God says, “They will strike at your head,” in Genesis 3:15, who was He speaking about? And how will God’s original plan for mankind be restored through this first messianic promise? Listen in for an answer to these questions and more on this episode of Making Great Saints.

In God’s first messianic promise (Genesis 3:15), He is telling us in no uncertain terms that He will never go back on His original plan to create us in His image and likeness. Rather, He will restore His perfect decision to do so in and through His Son.

[Then the LORD God said to the snake:] I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; They will strike at your head, while you strike at their heel.

Genesis 3:15

The early Church Fathers interpret the “they” meant by God in this verse as Our Blessed Mother and Her Son, Jesus. In this episode, Dr. Fonseca goes into greater detail about how, through the Annunciation, this first messianic promise is brought to fulfillment. Dr. Fonseca explains:

  • Only Jesus can be the worthy representative for us before the Father
  • Through the sinless and “immaculate” womb of Our Blessed Mother, Jesus was brought into the world to save us from our sins
  • Why Jesus has no hesitation telling us, “be perfect, just as your heavenly Father is perfect” (Matthew 5:48)
A Message of Hope
